Beautiful Irwindale Sunday Sunset

This is Virginia the caretaker of the notoriously haunted Goldfield Hotel, at the hotel's grand piano in the vacant downstairs. The Goldfield Hotel is quite the spooky place that Virginia will give you a tour of if you are nice, and do not bring dogs or children. ("Not coverd by my insurance ! ) She will point out the ghost Elizabeth, and some flowers and plush toys where the spirit will make itself known in a downstairs dark spot of the 162 room ghost palace. Virginia has a nice new Cadillac, and certainly does not need nor want the old Mercedes that one of her tenants left her when he passed away. She only wanted $200. for it. I put a battery in it and ran up and down main street Goldfield in the 33 year old car today. Goldfield is like being in an episode of the Twilight Zone. I hope the car isn't haunted, at least not with malevolent spirits, anyway.

A "Light Field Camera" captures an infinite depth of field and lets the viewer focus on the part of the photo they want. This requires interaction, most likely, from the viewer, as seen in this flash gallery page where you click on the picture to focus. Mountain View based Lytro has announced their first product availability for early 2012.
They are announcing it starting at $399.
Now, if they could integrate the viewing of these photos with an eyeball tracker that can tell what part of the photo you are looking at, so you don't have to click on the photo to focus it, like in the gallery linked above, that would be something.

Richard is on the last few days of his visit to North America, and not knowing what else to do we dropped in on Shotgun at CBS Radio on the Miracle Mile this evening just before Shotz went off the air at 7pm. Richard is here until wheels up on QF 12 Saturday night.

After doing some searching around, I managed to find the notorious couple, Dig Spaceand GerryBear ensconced in south Austin. Dig was in his gallery with his latest work "Cosmic Alignment 2012" Gerry was around as well, as provided the appropriate aperitif for the occasion. Haven't seen Gerry since '06 and it's probably been a decade since I've crossed paths with Dig. This is Dig's latest work;

I was brought in to help when Belo Broadcasting severed their local marketing agreement for KCWX-DT 2 in Austin two years ago.
I dropped by and looked at the place earlier this evening

There's a cool skateboard park around the corner from KCWX behind the Austin Community College parking garage.

From SpaceWeather.com; "MAJOR X-FLARE + CME UPDATE: Earth-orbiting satellites have detected a long-duration X1.4-class solar flare coming from a new sunspot on the sun's eastern limb. The blast, which peaked at 1100 UT, produced a significant coronal mass ejection (CME). Using data from the SOHO-STEREO fleet of spacecraft, analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab have modeled the trajectory of the CME and concluded that the body of the cloud will not hit Earth. A minor glancing encounter with the outskirts of the CME is, however, possible on Sept. 25th."

These guys from GM drove their 2012 Regal down highway 318 at 120+ mph on Sunday, winning the "120 MPH" class competition during the Silver State Classic. I drove that on Monday, not quite as fast, in a red Corolla.

Double fatality in Silver State Classic

After making it past that airplane on a pole in Fallon, and stopping for an iced coffee at the Owl Club in Austin, I'm back in Ely for a weekend. This trip to Ely landed me in the Jimmy Stewart room at the Hotel Nevada. It was the last room available in the joint, as the big Silver State Classic Challenge road race down highway 318 to Las Vegas had much of town sold out. I went down south of Lund with a groups of hams that set up repeater towers along the rout of the SSCC road race. Highway 318 between Ely and Las Vegas is closed all day today because of the event, I can drive down the Great Basin via that toward the Extraterrestrial Highway sometime tomorrow.
